Molly Hensley-Clancy at BuzzFeed has posted an article that says the U.S. Department of Education will approved two deals between nonprofits and for profit entities. The largest of the deals is between Purdue University and owner of Kaplan University. In the spring Purdue president Mitch Daniels purchased Kaplan for $1.00. The for-profit owner will still have some business dealing with Kaplan after the sale. This approval, if true, was one of the last roadblocks to completion of the deal.
The move is a sign of a shift in how the federal government will treat colleges that want to shed the for-profit label.
