California and Pennsylvania Implementing New Models for Community Colleges

Ashley Smith at Inside Higher Ed has an article about California and Pennsylvania implementing new models for their community colleges.  Both states will be creating new institutions.

California is creating a new online only college to serve students note reached by its current 114 campus.  The state already has an Online Education Initiative (OEI) and the California Virtual Campus (CVS).  OEI is “a collaborative program that allows students to register in online courses across multiple degrees.”  While CVS, works along with OEI “to helps student find transferable courses to California State University campuses.”

Pennsylvania Department of Education

Pennsylvania’s Department of Education has approved the creation of the Rural Regional College of Northern Pennsylvania to meet the needs of students above Interstate 80.  This new organization will not be online or brick-and-mortar, it is completely interactive television.
